Our Dinner at Umi Japanese Restaurant

Umi Japanese Restaurant is a new Japanese restaurant at Lexis Suites Penang. As soon as I learned that it has opened, we wanted to give it a try. We booked a table for Friday, 26 February, 2016.

Being a Friday, our journey to Teluk Kumbar was slow, as we had to wade through rush hour traffic. The traffic was particularly heavy in the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, and all the lanes were crawling. But once we reached Bayan Lepas town, traffic became smooth.

Umi Japanese Restaurant has opened for just a week when we went there. It is still quite empty when we got there. I think not many people know about it yet. Umi Japanese Restaurant has a quiet elegance to it. There are individual rooms for groups.

Our reserved table has been prepared for us, and once we settled in, the Sales & Marketing Director of Lexis Suites came to greet us. She also introduced us to the chef, who was previously attached to a major Japanese restaurant in Penang.

My wife selected the tempura bento (RM45 nett) while I selected the sukiyaki set (RM48 nett). The tempura bento includes grilled salmon, chawanmushi, miso soup and salad. My sukiyaki set also comes with chawanmushi. In addition, we also had a platter of sashimi.

It was a very nice meal at Umi Japanese Restaurant. Although at first I thought the meal was not a lot, turns out I couldn't finish my rice. It was quite substantial after all. On the whole, the restaurant is still pretty quiet. During our visit, there were only three tables occupied. For a quiet dinner away from the crowds, I will certain make a return visit.
