SojiMart is an online marketplace on Facebook where all the members can be vendors to sell almost anything. I started it on 21 May 2020, after I witnessed how much the Conditional Movement Control Order is negatively affecting many businesses. Concerned that the CMCO might ruin the livelihood of many people, I decided to do something to help them establish a new online business where they don't have to worry about having to pay rent or commission.

At SojiMart, vendors can sell almost anything except the following:

  1. Narcotics (including vaping equipment and cigarettes)
  2. Weapons *
  3. Medicine **
  4. Adult Toys (including adult literature, entertainment, services, and oral and applied contraceptives)
  5. Wildlife ***
  6. Posts for gambling and lending money
* Kitchen utensils such as kitchen knives, choppers and gardening and farming equipment are not considered weapons and are allowed to be sold here.
** Health supplements and nutritional products are allowed.
*** Domestic pets and farm animals are allowed.

Posting Requirements

  1. It is compulsory that all Sales Posts include a title mentioning what is being sold, or what service is being offered, as well as the city or country where it is available for purchase. This title has to be the first line of the sentence of the post. See examples here
  2. All sales posts must show price. It can be a fixed price, negotiable price, or price indication such as "from RM20", "between RM50 to RM70" or "not more than RM399". Telling people to "PM me" without showing a price is not allowed.
  3. All posts promoting products or services are not allowed to sell/offer nothing but instead tell buyers to visit another Facebook page or webpage. If a product or service is offered in the post, with price showing, the vendor is allowed to tell buyer to continue to another Facebook page or webpage for more selection.
  4. Posts selling/offering nothing but tell buyers to LIKE or SHARE a Facebook page is not allowed.
  5. Vendors promoting network marketing/multi-level marketing/direct selling products may seek price display exemption from me. The text, "(Brand name) is a network marketing/multi-level marketing/direct selling product and price display exemption has been sought and received from Timothy Tye" must be included in the post.
  6. Vendors are allowed to re-post as often as they wish, but they must delete any previous posts before posting the same post again.
  7. Vendors are allowed to group all the things they sell into one sales post. They are allowed to separate all the things they sell into individual sales posts. SojiMart does not limit the number of sales posts a vendor has at any one time, as long as each sales post promotes a different item.
  8. Vendors may create an online storefront to group together all the disparate posts for each individual item.
  9. Vendors may use hashtags and add topics to group and categorize their products and services.

Updates of Posting Requirements

  1. 1 October 2020

    1. Ads for face masks and hand sanitizers are now ALLOWED on SojiMart on a trial basis. As long as Facebook does not start penalizing again, you are allowed to post ads for face masks and hand sanitizers here again.

    2. Ads for shops and businesses are now ALLOWED and does NOT require product price display. What that means is that you are allowed to promote your shop/business so that people know about it. Posting requirement remains. That means, your FIRST LINE must be in English and mention your type of business and the city it is in (example: BARBER SHOP IN PENANG; COFFEE SHOP IN TAIPING; BALINESE MASSAGE IN LANGKAWI, etc.)

    3. From now and for the foreseeable future, I waive the food review fee for food review visits anywhere in Penang. (In the past, I do charge a one-time fee for any food review invites.) I see many food outlets are in need of help, since I don't really need to earn from this, I am happy to help give exposure whenever I have the time. Alternatively, they are now allowed to post on SojiMart, to promote their business at no charge.

Terms & Conditions of using SojiMart

  1. SojiMart is not responsible for the products and services offered by its vendors. It will however ban vendors that compromises its reputation by providing products and services of dubious nature.
  2. Vendors are expected to conduct themselves professionally and serve the customers courteously. Vendors may be banned from SojiMart for rudeness to shoppers. Vendors and shoppers may be banned for arguing.
  3. Vendors are given preapproval to post their ads once they have demonstrated that they are able to comply with SojiMart's posting requirement. Vendors who continue to defy the posting requirement, after being given preapproval will have their ads deleted without notification, and if they continue to do so, will be banned.
