Manly Beach (GPS: -33.79315, 151.28764) is a famous beach in Sydney, Australia. It is located at the well known suburb of Manly 17km northeast of Sydney's Central Business District. Manly Beach, consists of three sections, from north to south namely Queenscliff, North Steyne, and South Steyne. Not far from Manly Beach are Fairy Bower and Shelley Beach. Adjacent to Sydney Harbour National Park, Fairy Bower is one of the few large wave surfing spots in Sydney and produces a long right hand wave breaking over a reef.

Manly got its name even earlier than Sydney itself. The name was given by Capt. Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Waves, to the indigenous people living there, saying "their confidence and manly behaviour made me give the name of Manly Cove to this place". The people mentioned were men of the Kay-ye-my clan. While looking for a source of fresh water in the area, Phillip encountered members of the clan, and after a misunderstanding he was speared in the shoulder by one of them. To his lasting credit, the progressively-minded Phillip ordered his men not to retaliate.

Today Manly Beach is highly popular with tourists and locals alike; a popularity rivalled only by Bondi Beach south of the harbour.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
