The Royal Exhibition Building, located within the Carlton Gardens, is a heritage building in Melbourne, Australia. It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2004 during the 28th session of the World Heritage Committe, which met in Suzhou, China from 28 June to 7 July of that year. It was the first building in Australia to be honored with such a recognition.

What to See in Royal Exhibition Building & Carlton Gardens

The Royal Exhibition Building is an exquisite structure combining elements of Byzantine, Romaneque, Lambardic and Italian Renaissance styles. It was purpose built for the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880.

Carlton Gardens is a 26-hectare park in Melbourne. Within its grounds are several public buildings including the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne Museum and Imax Cinema. Carlton gardens has beautiful Victoria landscape, and is planted with English oaks, white poplar, Plane trees, elms, conifers, cedars, turkey oaks, Araucarias and Moreton Bay figs, with manicured lawns and beds of annuals.

Location of the Royal Exhibition Building

The Royal Exhibition Building is located within Carlton Gardens, which is on the north-eastern part of the central business district of Melbourne, Australia, bounded by Victoria Street, Rathdowne Street, Carlton Street and Nicholson Street. It is adjacent to Melbourne Museum, and is managed by Museum Victoria, which also manages Melbourne Museum.

History of Carlton Gardens

The history of Carlton Gardens goes back to 1839, when land was put aside for public parks, and one of these was Carlton Gardens. The design of the garden dates back to 1856, the work of Edward La Trobe Bateman. Minor changes were added in the 1870's under the direction of Clement Hodgkinson. In preparation for the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition, the garden underwent drastic redesigning.

The Royal Exhibition Building was designed by architect Joseph Reed, who drew inspiration from the Florence Cathedral as well as several buildings in Normandy, Caen and Paris. It was completed in time for the Melbourne International Exhibition.

How to go to Carlton Gardens

The Royal Exhibition Building is in Carlton, a suburb on the northern part of Melbourne. You can get there by tram from the city centre. Take trams 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 16, 64, 67 or 72, all of which you can catch at Swanston Street or St Kilda Road. Buses 200, 201, 203 and 207 also goes to Carlton.
