Noosa is a shire covering 868.7 sq km (335.4 sq mi) on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia. Located about 130 km (81 mi) north of Brisbane, it has a population of 52,000 people (2012 estimate). The shire of Noosa is grouped with the Shire of Maroochy and the City of Caloundra to form the Sunshine Coast Region.

The Noosa area was home to a number of indigenous tribes including the Undumbi, the Dulingbara and the Gabbi Gabbi before Europeans arrived. Captain James Cook sailed past the area in 1770, and nothing much in terms of European settlement took place until another century has passed.

A settlement called Tewantin was established in 1871. The following year, the coastal area from Noosa Heads to Peregian Beach for set aside for an Aboriginal Mission. However plans for the mission was cancelled in 1878, and the land opened for settlement. Tewantin developed for a while, but declined when railway line was constructed through the area. The beneficiary of this was the settlement of Noosa, which grew out of an isolated fishing village.

Noosa is today a popular tourist destination. The name Noosa can refer to Noosa Heads, Noosa Junction and Noosa Civic. Developed on environmentally-sensitive principles, it has one of the few north-facing beaches on the East Coast of Australia.

Visiting Noosa

You can fly to the Sunshine Coast from Brisbane, landing at the airport at Maroochydoore, 30 km to the south of Noosa, then rent a car to take you around. Driving all the way from Brisbane is also an option. Noosa is just about 150 km to the north.
