Mandurah, located just south of Perth, is the second largest city in Western Australia. It has a population of 86,000 people (2012 estimate).
The area around Mandurah was the traditional home of the Noongar people who called the area Mandjar, translated roughly as "meeting place". One of the earliest Europeans to set foot in the area was settler Thomas Peel, who arrived in 1829. He was to take up a land grant in the Swan River Colony.

Peel arrived to take up his land grant a month late, by which time his original grant has expired. Nonetheless he proceeded to establishe a settlement to the south of the Swan River colony and called it Clarence - in present-day Woodman Point. A host of misadventures forced him to abandon Clarence, ande he relocated, along with his fellow settlers to Mandjar, which was renamed Mandurah.
Mandurah began a slow growth until the late 20th century, when a change in lifestyle and recreational expectation turned it into a tourist destination for nature-related recreation. The well-preserved coastal waters of Mandurah is home to dolphins, pelicans and myriad forms of marine life. Today natural and man-made attractions make Mandurah a popular getaway for residents and visitors to Perth.
