Ipswich is a city on the southeastern part of Queensland, Australia. It is located about 40 km to the south of Brisbane. The city of some 165,000 people (2012 estimate) has become a part of the Greater Brisbane conurbation since the mid 20th century.

Before the arrival of Europeans to the area, the indigenous people of the area comprised many different tribes of which the predominant are the Yuggera and Ugarapul. The first European to explore the area was Captain Patrick Logan in 1826. He discovered large deposits of limestone and other minerals.

The town of Ipswich, named after Ipswich, England, was established in 1843, the same year that limestone mining began in the area. In 1858 it was given municipal status. Ipswich was one of the contenders for the status of Queensland state capital, a position eventually taken by Brisbane.

Limestone quarrying was the main industry in Ipswich. Since then it moved to coal mining, becoming one of the main coal mining towns of Queensland. Ipswich also has a manufacturing base, saw mills and foundries. It is home to the University of Queensland. Downtown Ipswich has a number of large shopping complexes including the Redbank Plaza shopping mall, one of the main shopping centers in town.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
