Albury is the second biggest inland city in New South Wales after Wagga Wagga. It is located on the northern bank of the Murray River, across from the town of Wodonga in Victoria. Albury has a population of 44,000 (2011 estimate). It is located on the Hume Highway approximately 588 km (365 mi) from Sydney and 300 km (190 mi) from Melbourne.

The urban area of Albury is bounded by the Murray River, Monument Hill and the town railway line. Dean Street is the main street of town while the cultural precinct is arouond QE2 Square, where you find the Albury Library Museum, Albury Regional Art Gallery, Albury Performing Arts Centre and Convention Centre, and the Murray Conservatorium.

Albury experiences a warm temperate climate. The hottest month is January, with temperature rising to 31.2°C (88.2°F) while the coldest is July, when it drops to 2.7°C (36.9°F). July is also the wettest month.

The Albury area was inhabited by the Wiradjuri indigenous tribe until the arrivial of Europeans under the Hume and Hovell Expedition, led by Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824. Five years later, Captain Charles Sturt discovered the Hume River from its confluence with the Murrumbidgee River. A settlement grew up around the 1830's. It was originally intended to be known as Bungambrewatha, but was changed to Albury in the Government Gazette of 1839.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
