Sepang is a district and town located at the southernmost part of Selangor. It is best known as the site of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), KLIA2, and the Sepang International Circuit, home of Malaysia’s major motorsport events. The district has rapidly developed from a coastal agricultural area into one of Malaysia’s key transportation and technological hubs, with Cyberjaya forming its administrative and economic heart. 1
The Sepang District historically comprised fishing and agricultural villages scattered along Selangor’s southern coastline. Its administrative centre was established in the small town of Sepang, located near the border with Negeri Sembilan. The area remained relatively rural until the 1990s, when the federal government selected it as the site for Malaysia’s new international airport. 2
The opening of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in 1998 dramatically transformed Sepang into a key national gateway. The airport spurred rapid urbanisation, infrastructure development, and the establishment of Cyberjaya as a smart city and technology hub. 3
Although Sepang town itself remains modest in scale, the district is vast, covering nearly 600 square kilometres. It includes urban, industrial, and rural zones, with its northern area dominated by Cyberjaya and KLIA, while the coastal west remains home to fishing villages like Bagan Lalang. 4
The district headquarters of Majlis Perbandaran Sepang (MPSepang) is located in Cyberjaya, reflecting the administrative and economic shift from the traditional town to the new urban centre. 5
Sepang’s economy is strongly driven by aviation, technology, and tourism. The airport complex includes KLIA, KLIA2, and Mitsui Outlet Park, creating tens of thousands of jobs. Meanwhile, Cyberjaya is home to data centres, tech firms, universities, and multinational offices. 6
Infrastructure in the district is well-developed, with major expressways such as the North–South Expressway Central Link (E6) and South Klang Valley Expressway (E26) providing direct connectivity to Shah Alam, Putrajaya, and Seremban. The Maju Expressway (E20) and Seremban–Port Dickson Highway (E29) also link the area to Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan. 7
Sepang benefits from comprehensive road and air connectivity. In addition to major expressways, the KLIA Transit and ERL services connect the district to Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. The proposed expansion of public transit to Cyberjaya and beyond may further enhance accessibility in the future. 8
Tourism in Sepang is centred around motorsports, aviation, and coastal leisure. Visitors often combine stays in nearby resorts such as Avani Sepang Goldcoast Resort with trips to the Sepang International Circuit. The district’s coastal charm and modern amenities make it a diverse destination catering to both business and leisure travellers. 9
