Bestari Jaya is a semi-rural town in the Kuala Selangor District of Selangor, Malaysia. Formerly known as Batang Berjuntai, the town has evolved from a tin-mining and plantation centre into a developing education hub and residential community. It is home to the main campus of Universiti Selangor (UNISEL) and several new housing developments. 1
Bestari Jaya was originally known as Batang Berjuntai, a settlement established during the British colonial era as part of the Selangor tin-mining belt. Companies such as Berjuntai Tin Dredging Ltd operated large dredging machines in the surrounding wetlands. 4
The decline of the tin industry in the 1980s shifted the town’s economy toward agriculture and small-scale industries. The name Batang Berjuntai means "dangling branch". In 2007, the government renamed Batang Berjuntai to Bestari Jaya to modernise its image and remove unfavourable linguistic connotations. That's another way of saying that the self-righteous powers-that-be considered the name too graphic for dirty minds. Bestari Jaya isn't a popular choice, and most people continue to call the place Batang Berjuntai. Nevertheless the name Bestari Jaya now appears on expressway signs.1
Today, Bestari Jaya blends rural charm with new development. The landscape features former mining ponds, oil palm plantations, and expanding residential neighbourhoods. The town’s community is diverse, comprising Malay, Chinese, and Indian residents, along with students from various Malaysian states studying at UNISEL. 37
While still quiet compared to major Selangor towns, Bestari Jaya has seen growing commercial activity—cafés, mini markets, student housing, and service shops have appeared around the UNISEL campus area. 38
The property market in Bestari Jaya remains affordable by Selangor standards. As of 2025, the median residential property price is around RM190,000, with a median price per square foot of RM141. 6
Commercial properties, particularly shoplots near the main road, record median prices around RM575,000. 6 Developers have also begun acquiring land for future projects; notably, Scientex Berhad expanded its land bank by purchasing large tracts near Bestari Jaya for mixed development. 9
Bestari Jaya is primarily accessed via the Jalan Rawang–Bestari Jaya (B27), recently upgraded to improve connectivity with North–South Expressway Northern Route (PLUS, E1) and Rawang town. 5
The town is also reachable through secondary routes leading to Kuala Selangor and Ijok. Though public transportation options are limited, local bus services and ride-hailing options serve the student and working populations. 8
Although the town has officially been called Bestari Jaya since 2007, many locals and older residents still affectionately refer to it by its former name, Batang Berjuntai. The term remains a nostalgic identifier for those who grew up during the mining era. 1

Batang Berjuntai is "off the beaten track". Whether you are coming from Kuala Lumpur or Penang, take the North South Expressway till Exit 115. Continue on the E35 Guthrie Corridor Expressway until the first interchange, then exit in the direction of Kuala Selangor to the E25 LATAR Expressway. At the end of the expressway, you exit at Exit 2501 and then turn right in the direction of Ijok.
When you reach Simpang Tiga Ijok (see below), turn left and follow State Route B35 (Jalan Bukit Badong) until you reach Batang Berjuntai. There isn't much to see in Batang Berjuntai in terms of tourist attractions. There's the campus of Universiti Industri Selangor, but it's not so much of touristic interest.
