Sungai Lembing Museum (GPS: 3.91377, 103.03238) is a museum of tin mining in the town of Sungai Lembing in Pahang. The museum is housed in a hilltop bungalow off Jalan Sungai Lembing.
Sungai Lembing Museum provides an insight into the tin-mining activities that was carried out in the area, particularly from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. Rich deposits of tin ore have been discovered in the Sungai Lembing area and have been mined in small quantities for ages. However it was only during the 1880s, when demand for tin soared, that the British began large-scale tin mining in the area.
Tin mining in Sungai Lembing is unique for the local mining industry in that much of the mining was carried out underground. Between 1906 and 1986, this was done by the Pahang Consolidated Company Limited, which was given the control over tin mining in the area. By the time the company was liquidated in 1986, following a collapse in world tin prices, a total of 322 kilometers of mining tunnels have been dug in Sungai Lembing, making it one of the largest underground tin mine in the world. Reaching a depth of 700 meters, it was also one of the deepest.
Sungai Lembing Museum is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Entrance fee is RM5 per adult (RM2 for Malaysians) and RM2 per child (Non Malaysian citizen).
