Pekeliling is a historically significant locality in central Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Though not a defined residential neighbourhood today, the name refers to the area around Jalan Pekeliling—now officially known as Jalan Tun Razak—and its vicinity near Titiwangsa and Chow Kit. The locality played an important role in the city’s early urban development and public housing history.
The name Pekeliling dates back to the early decades of Kuala Lumpur’s post-independence growth. During the 1960s, the area gained prominence with the construction of the Pekeliling Flats, one of the city’s first high-rise public housing projects designed to resettle residents from squatter areas. The flats symbolised Malaysia’s urban modernisation but were later demolished in the 2010s to make way for redevelopment1.
Adjacent to the flats was the Pekeliling Bus Terminal, which served as a key intercity transport hub linking Kuala Lumpur with destinations across Pahang and the East Coast. The terminal was eventually closed and replaced by the modern Terminal Pekeliling nearby, though much of its historic identity remains in local memory2.
Today, Pekeliling has largely merged into the greater Titiwangsa and Chow Kit districts. The area is dominated by government facilities, medical institutions, and major transport nodes, including the Titiwangsa MRT Station, Titiwangsa LRT Station, and Titiwangsa Monorail Station. Redevelopment efforts continue to transform its landscape, maintaining Pekeliling’s historical name within Kuala Lumpur’s evolving city fabric.
