Imbi is a vibrant urban area in central Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, located just south of Bukit Bintang. The area blends the city’s early 20th-century commercial roots with modern shopping, entertainment, and hospitality landmarks. Its name, derived from Jalan Imbi, remains synonymous with old-meets-new Kuala Lumpur.
Imbi developed in the early decades of the 20th century as Kuala Lumpur’s commercial activities expanded outward from the old city core. The area was once lined with pre-war shophouses and small trading establishments, forming a vital part of the city’s retail and social landscape. Its name comes from Jalan Imbi, a road believed to have been named after an early Malay landowner or community leader in the area1.
Today, Imbi is a dynamic city-centre district known for its blend of old and new. The area’s most prominent landmark, Berjaya Times Square, opened in 2003 and remains one of Malaysia’s largest retail complexes, complete with a hotel and indoor theme park. Nearby, Low Yat Plaza continues to be a leading IT retail hub, while traditional markets such as Imbi Market (now relocated to ICC Pudu) preserve its community heritage2.
Imbi is exceptionally well connected within central Kuala Lumpur. The Imbi Monorail Station provides easy access along the Kuala Lumpur Monorail line, while nearby Bukit Bintang MRT Station on the MRT Kajang Line and Hang Tuah LRT Station enhance multimodal connectivity. The area is also served by Rapid KL buses that connect to major city destinations.
The name “Imbi” has become so closely associated with city-centre shopping that locals often use it interchangeably with “Bukit Bintang,” even though it technically refers to the southern portion of the Golden Triangle3.
