Danau Kota is a bustling neighbourhood located in the Setapak area of Kuala Lumpur. It lies approximately 8 km northeast of the city centre, and is known for its vibrant commercial activity, residential developments, and the popular Danau Kota Uptown night market. The name "Danau Kota," which translates to "City Lake," reflects the area’s origins around a former lake, now largely reclaimed for urban development.
Danau Kota was developed in the 1980s and 1990s as part of the broader expansion of the Setapak area. The region was once semi-rural, characterised by tin mining and low-density housing. As Kuala Lumpur’s population grew, the government and private developers transformed the area into a mix of residential, commercial, and retail spaces. Its accessibility via Jalan Genting Klang spurred rapid development, making Danau Kota a thriving urban enclave today.
The neighbourhood is largely urban, with a mix of middle-class landed homes, medium-cost apartments, and newer condominiums. Commercial activity is centred along Jalan Danau Kota and Jalan Genting Klang, where rows of shops, eateries, and banks serve the local community. Despite being densely populated, Danau Kota retains a lively, close-knit atmosphere that reflects the multiethnic makeup of Kuala Lumpur’s residents.
Properties in Danau Kota include a variety of residential types, from older walk-up flats to newer serviced residences. As of October 2025, high-rise condominiums such as PV10 and PV15 (part of the Platinum Victory series) are priced between RM450,000 and RM700,000, depending on unit size and facilities. Rentals average between RM1,400 and RM2,200 per month for a mid-sized apartment. The area remains popular with students and young professionals due to its proximity to TAR UMT (Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology) and its affordable living costs.
Danau Kota enjoys convenient public transport access. The nearest stations are Wangsa Maju MRT Station and Sri Rampai MRT Station, both on the Kelana Jaya Line, providing direct connections to Bukit Bintang, KLCC, and Ampang. Several Rapid KL bus routes also serve the area. Motorists benefit from easy access to Jalan Genting Klang and major highways such as the Duta–Ulu Klang Expressway (DUKE, E33) and Kuala Lumpur–Karak Expressway (E8).
The Uptown Danau Kota Night Market was once so popular that it operated daily until the late 2010s. Today, it continues as a weekend night market, drawing visitors from across the Klang Valley for its bargain shopping and lively atmosphere1.
