Damansara, Kuala Lumpur

Damansara is one of the most recognisable suburban districts in the Klang Valley, located to the northwest of Kuala Lumpur. The name refers to a broad region that straddles the border between Kuala Lumpur and the neighbouring state of Selangor, encompassing several distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own identity and character. Within Kuala Lumpur’s boundary, the area includes Bukit Damansara (also known as Damansara Heights), while adjacent areas such as Petaling Jaya, Kota Damansara, and Mutiara Damansara fall under Selangor’s administration.

Quick Facts

History

The origins of Damansara date back to the late 19th century, when it was part of a vast mukim (subdistrict) within the Petaling District of Selangor. This historic mukim stretched across what are today Kuala Lumpur’s western suburbs and much of Petaling Jaya. When the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur was created in 1974, the boundary line effectively split the old Damansara area in two, leaving Bukit Damansara inside Kuala Lumpur and areas such as Kota Damansara and Mutiara Damansara within Selangor1.

Geographically, a largely forested area known as Bukit Kiara now separates Bukit Damansara from Mutiara Damansara. For many years, before the construction of the SPRINT Expressway (E23), motorists had to drive around the Bukit Kiara forest reserve via Jalan Duta or the old Jalan Damansara to travel between the two sides. The completion of the SPRINT Expressway in the early 2000s finally created a direct connection through the hills, linking the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor portions of Damansara more efficiently2.

Over time, the name “Damansara” evolved from describing a single administrative unit into a collective term symbolising suburban growth and affluence. Today, it encompasses a cluster of neighbourhoods that together form one of the Klang Valley’s most desirable residential and commercial belts3.

Characteristics

Within Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Damansara or Damansara Heights represents the city’s upscale residential side, featuring luxurious detached homes, condominiums, and embassies. In contrast, the Damansara areas in Petaling Jaya and Selangor—such as Kota Damansara and Mutiara Damansara—are vibrant mixed-use townships with major shopping and entertainment destinations including The Curve and IKEA Damansara. The overall Damansara area strikes a balance between city accessibility and suburban comfort.

Real Estate

Real estate in the Damansara area is among the most sought after in the Klang Valley. In Damansara Heights, luxury landed homes and condominiums dominate, with property prices as of October 2025 ranging between RM1.8 million and RM5 million for landed houses, and RM900,000 to RM2 million for condominiums. Monthly rentals typically start around RM3,000 for apartments and can exceed RM10,000 for upscale bungalows4.

Getting There

Damansara is highly accessible via major highways including the Sprint Expressway (E23), the Damansara–Puchong Expressway (LDP, E11), and the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE, E1). The MRT Kajang Line also serves the area, with stations such as Pusat Bandar Damansara, Semantan, and Phileo Damansara providing efficient connections to central Kuala Lumpur. Numerous Rapid KL bus routes also traverse the district, linking residential zones to commercial hubs.

Attractions and Lifestyle

The wider Damansara area is home to some of the Klang Valley’s most popular leisure and retail destinations. These include Damansara Uptown with its renowned eateries, The Curve and 1 Utama Shopping Centre, and the Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC). Bukit Damansara itself offers a quieter, more exclusive ambiance with cafés, boutique offices, and scenic hillside residences surrounded by greenery.

Fun Fact

The term “Damansara” is so widely recognised that it appears in the names of multiple suburbs across Selangor and Kuala Lumpur—more than a dozen in total—making it one of the most commonly reused locality names in Malaysia5.
