South Kedah Expressway (SPIKE, E4 / LEKAS)
Overview
The South Kedah Expressway, also known by its Malay name Lebuhraya Kedah Selatan (LEKAS) or Sungai Petani–Kedah Inner Expressway (SPIKE), is a planned expressway project in the state of Kedah, Malaysia. It is designated route E4, intended to provide an alternative north-south bypass route to the existing toll-free portion of the North-South Expressway in southern Kedah, and to improve connectivity among towns like Sungai Petani, Bandar Baharu, Kulim, Lunas, Padang Serai, and its surrounding areas. 1
Current Status
As of the latest available information, the South Kedah Expressway (SPIKE / LEKAS) is still at the planning stage and has not yet been constructed. There are formal proposals and detailed plans, including route alignments and proposed interchanges, but construction has not begun. 2
Route & Key Features
- The expressway is proposed to run from the Sungai Petani North Interchange (in the north) to the Bandar Baharu Interchange (in the south). 1
- It will pass through or serve towns such as Sungai Lalang, Padang Serai, Kulim, Serdang, Lunas. 3
- Length proposed is around ~ 100-102 km. 4
- Designed as a toll expressway (closed toll system) under a concessionaire, expected concession period in planning is ~33 years. 4
- Cost estimates are around RM 3.2 billion. 4
Purpose & Benefits
SPIKE (LEKAS) is planned primarily to:
- Provide a bypass for traffic that currently must use the toll-free section of the North-South Expressway between Prai / Penang and southern Kedah or Bandar Baharu. This should ease congestion. 1
- Improve connectivity to industrial zones such as the Kulim Hi-Tech Park, and to towns like Lunas, Padang Serai, etc. 4
- Shorten travel times for traffic that otherwise would detour or get impacted by local traffic along existing roads. 1
Challenges & Considerations
- Land acquisition and environmental impact assessments will likely pose challenges, as with many expressway projects. Detailed alignment studies are needed. 2
- Funding and concession agreement must be finalised. 4
- Ensuring smooth integration with the existing road network, particularly interchanges with the North-South Expressway and access to local towns. 1
