Tama (Japanese: 多摩市) is a city on the southern part of Tokyo Metropolis, Japan. It covers 21.08 sq km (8.14 sq mi) and has a population of 148,000 people (2012 estimate).
Tama is home to the Tama New Town, the largest residential project in Japan developed in the 1970s. The city began as Tama village, which was founded in 1889. It was given town status in 1964 and city status in 1971.
