Chōfu (Japanese: 調布市) is a city on the central southern part of Tokyo Metropolis, Japan, to the west of the special wards of Central Tokyo. It covers 21.53 sq km (8.31 sq mi) and has a population of 225,000 people (2012 estimate).
Chōfu is bordered by the floodplains of the Tama River, near the geographic center of Tokyo. Its history goes back to 1 April 1889, when Chōfu Town and Jindai Village were founded. At that time, both were within Kanagawa Prefecture. They were transferred to Tokyo Metropolis on 1 April, 1893. On 3 November, 1952, Chōfu andn Jindai were merged to form the city of Chōfu.
Today Chōfu serves as a bedroom community for people working in Tokyo. It is home to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.
Chōfu is served by the Keio Electric Railway Keiō Line (Stations: Sengawa, Tsutsujigaoka, Shibasaki, Kokuryō, Fuda, Chōfu. and Nishi-Chōfu) and the Keio Electric Railway Keiō Sagamihara Line (Chōfu Station). If going there by road, you can take the Japan National Route 20 (Kōshū Kaidō) or the Chūō Expressway.
