Azabu (麻布) is a neighbourhood in Minato, Tokyo. It today comprises nine districts, namely Azabujuban, Azabudai, Azabu-Nagasakacho, Azabu-Mamianacho, Nishiazabu, Higashizabu, Minamiazabu, Motoazabu and Roppongi. Azabu is the most expensive and upscale district in the city.
Azabu existed as a ward of Tokyo from 1878 until 1947. The area suffered severe damage during the Second World War which devastated much of its commercial precinct. This was not redeveloped, and as a result, Azabu is mostly residential today.
Azabu is today a choice residence of successful Japanese artists, among them manga artist Naoko Takeuchi and vocalist Ayumi Hamsaki. It has incredibly expensive real estate such as the Roppongi area.
