The history of Dazaifu dates back to the Japanese ancient times. As early as the 7th century, it was already mentioned, as the site of the Imperial Office for Kyushu. By the 13th century, threat from Mongol invasion as well as decline in imperial authority diminished the town's significance. Dazaifu was the base of the Shoni clan during medieval times.
