Dazaifu (Japanese: 太宰府市) is a city in
Fukuoka Prefecture,
Japan. It covers 30 sq km (11.42 sq mi) and has a population of 71,000 people (2012 estimate).
The history of Dazaifu dates back to the Japanese ancient times. As early as the 7th century, it was already mentioned, as the site of the Imperial Office for
Kyushu. By the 13th century, threat from Mongol invasion as well as decline in imperial authority diminished the town's significance. Dazaifu was the base of the Shoni clan during medieval times. Today the city bears historic sights from its various periods.
