Berastagi, Sumatra, Indonesia

Berastagi, SumatraBerastagi, a town in the Sumatra highlands, with cool, refreshing air. (27 April, 2006)

Berastagi is a resort in the Karo Highlands, home of the Karo Batak people of northern Sumatra. Berastagi's altitude of 1300 meters above sea level contributes to a cool and relaxing climate, allowing Berastagi to produce a variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers. Berastagi is particularly famous for its passion fruits. Most the Berastagi's produce is on sale at the produce market near the centre of town. As this is a tourist spot, bargaining is the order of the day.

I explored Berastagi with a small group of AsiaExplorers members, on our way to Lake Toba. We spent a night up here. At night, the weather is quite cold. We took the opportunity to walked the country lane at night, to visit another hotel, which has livelier entertainment (in other words, karaoke).

From our hotel, we are able to see two live volcanoes, Gunung Sibayak, which is nearer, is to the north while the cone-shaped Gunung Sinabung, which is slightly further away, is to the west. On the following morning, our guide took up to Gundaling Hill, where we can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding lowlands, and get an unblocked view of the volcanoes.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
