Pura Tegeh Koripan is one of the oldest and highest-placed temples in Bali. It is located on the slope of Gunung Penulisan ("Mountain of Inscriptions") at an elevation of 1,400 meters (4,950 feet).
Pura Tegeh Koripan has a history going back to the 11th century. It is in fact a complex of five temples. They are set on eleven levels of terraces along the slope. It is believed to date back to pre-Hindu-Buddhist era, when the Balinese practised a megalithic culture.
The most important is Pura Panarajon, located at the highest part. At this temple are stone tablets or stelae and statues dating to the 10th century.
