Thiruvananthapuram (Malayalam: തിരുവനന്തപുരം) is the capital of
Kerala in South India. The city was also known in English as
Trivandrum until 1991, when the government reinstated the original name. It is on the west coast of India, close to the southernmost part of the country. With a population of close to 745,000 people, Thiruvananthapuram is the largest city in Kerala. The name Thiruvananthapuram means "Abode of the Lord Ananta" in Malayalam, in reference to the Hindu deity whose temple is in the centre of the city.
