The name Ranchi is said to derive from the village of Archi which was on the site. The name Archi means "bamboo stave:.
Today Ranchi has developed as a healthcare hub of the region. Having said that, though plenty in numbers, the hospitals in Ranchi are not as well-equipped as those in the bigger cities of India. In recent years, the city has also witnessed a retail boom as several shopping centers are opened in the city.
