Raipur is the capital of the state of Chhattisgarh, India following the creation of the state out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000. The municipality covers 226 sq km (87 sq mi) and has a population exceeding one million people (2012 estimate).
The history of human habitation here goes back to antiquity. The Satawahana kings ruled the area in the 2nd to 3rd century AD. The Mahanadi River flows through the eastern part of the city while the Maikal Hills stretches across the northwest. Its economy is agriculture-based though a number of industries have been established here, for coal, power, steel and aluminium.
