Pune is the second largest city in Maharashtra state and the eighth largest metropolis in India. It is second in size in Maharashtra to Mumbai. Pune covers 1,125 sq km (434 sq mi) and has a population of 6.1 million people (2012 estimate).

Pune is situated at the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers. It is on the Deccan plateau, about 560 m (1,840 ft) above sea level. The earliest mention of Pune goes back to 847 AD. It was the seat of power for the Maratha Empire from the 17th to the early 19th century.

Pune (then written Poona) was captured by the British following the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1817. It was placed under the Bombay Presidency. In 1896 it was hit by a bubonic plague that caused withspread death and resulting in half its population fleeing to neighboring cities. The plague was brought under control through extreme measures by Indian Civil Service officer W.C. Rand. However he paid for the cruelty of his action when he was assassinated during the Diamond Jubilee celebration of Queen Victoria. His assassins were captured and hanged.

Pune experienced rapid development after Indian independence in 1947. A six-lane expressway linking it with Mumbai was completed in 2001. It is one of the centers for Information Technology in India. Other industries in Pune include automotive, education and finance.

Planning your trip to Pune

For a city of its size, Pune surprisingly has no civilian airport. All fights presently operate out of Pune's military airport. There are domestic flights from Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai and Nagpur and international flights from Dubai and Frankfurt.

Pune is also connected by train to all major cities in India.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
