Mandi (Hindi: मण्डी, Punjabi: ਮੰਦੀ) is a city in the district of the same name, in Himachal Pradesh, India. It is 143 km (89 mi) north of the state capital Shimla, and 184.6 km (114.7 mi) from the nearest major city, Chandigarh.
Located 1,044 m (3,425 ft) above sea level, Mandi experiences a subtropical highland climate. Summers are pleasant while winters are cold. The city is by the bank of the Beas River.
Mandi traces its beginnings to 1527, when it was founded by Ajbar Sen. Until recently, the anglicized version of the name was Mandav Nagar. Mandi served as the seat of Mandi State, a princely state that existed until the founding of Himachal Pradesh in 1948.
With a population approaching 70,000 people (2012 estimate), Mandi is the largest city in Himachal Pradesh, and has the second largest economy in the state after Kangra. It is the fastest developing city in the state and serves as the gateway to Kullu, Lahaul, Leh, Ladakh and various parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
