Kollam (formerly Quilon; Malayalam: കൊല്ലം) is is a city on the southern part of Kerala, India. It covers 58 sq km (22 sq mi) and has a population of 350,000 people (2012 estimate) within a metropolitan area of 1.1 million inhabitants.
The history of Kollam goes back to antiquity. It was the site described as Palombe in the 14th century book, Travels of Sir John Mandeville, as the site of the Fountain of Youth. In fact, the city has existed as early as the 9th century, and was a major seaport during the Chela Dynasty (3rd century BC to 12th century AD). Marco Polo is said to have passed through Kollam in 1292.
The Portuguese established their presence in Tangasseri, Kollam, in 1502. They were replaced by the Dutch in 1661, while the British replaced the Dutch in 1795. Today the city has a number of industries such as aluminium, ceramics and starch.
