Jorhat (যোৰহাট) is the second most important city in Assam after Guwahati, even though it is neither the capital nor the second biggest city, which is Silchar. The city was named for the two markets in the area, Chowkihat and Macharhat, located on either banks of the Bhoghoi river. It was established in the 18th century to serve as the capital, but in 1794, the capital was relocated to Sibsagar.
Jorhat is today a vibrant mix of the old and the new. It preserves the culture and heritage from the time when it served as the last capital of the Ahoms.
