Hazaribagh (Hindi: हज़ारीबाग़) is a city in central Jharkhand, India. It has a population of 154,000 people (2012 estimate).
The name Hazaribagh means "a thousand gardens", in reference to the many mango groves in the area. Hazaribagh has been inhabited for centuries, although due to the dense forest surrounding it, had remained isolated from outside influences.
Hazaribagh was under the Chotanagpur kingdom which was briefly subjugated by Akbar in 1556, but was again independent after Akbar's death. In 1616, the Governor of Bihar Ibrahim Khan Fateh Jang captured the 46th Raja of Chotanagpur, Durhan Sal, who was then imprisoned for 12 years but eventually released and reinstated on the throne.
