Gandhinagar (Gujarati: ગાંધીનગર) is the capital of the state of Gujarat in western India. It is located on the central part of the state, approximately 23 km to the north of Ahmedabad. The city covers 177 sq km (68 sq mi) and has a population of 196,000 people (2012 estimate).
Gandhinagar was a purpose-built city established in 1960 to be the capital of Gujarat. It is sited on the west bank of the River Sabarmati. The city is divided into thirty sectors. The city is famous for the Akshardham Gandhinagar Temple, the predecessor of the Akshardham Temple in Delhi, built by the same religious organization.
