Dharamsala is a small town on the western part of Himachal Pradesh, in northern India. The town is in the upper reaches of the Kangra Valley, about 1,457 m (4,780 ft) above sea level. It has a population of 20,000 people (2012 estimate). Undoubtedly the most renowned resident of Dharamsala is the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, who made Dharamsala his home after fleeing Tibet in 1959.
Dharamsala comprises two main sections namely Dharamsala proper and Lower Dharamsala, which comprise the area around Kotwali Bazaar. In addition, a third area, Upper Dharamsala, includes the suburb of McLeod Ganj, which is also called Little Lhasa, as it is the headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile and home to a large population of Tibetan refugees.
You can fly to Gaggal Airport (DHM) from Delhi, Chandigarh and Kulu. From there you can take a taxi to Dharamsala. Alternatively there are also buses to Dharamsala from Delhi and Pathankot.
