Bokaro Steel City (Hindi: बोकारो स्टील सिटी) is a city in the state of Jharkhand on the eastern part of India. It covers 183 sq km (71 sq mi) and has a population of 563,000 people (2012 estimate). As its name indicates, Bokaro Steel City is a major industrial center.
A number of heavy industries are based in Bokaro. It is home to the biggest steel plant in Asia. A major power plant is also being constructed here.
The history of Bokaro began when the area was selected by Jawaharlal Nehru for steel production using Soviet assistance. The site was formerly a village known as Maraphari. The first steel plant was incorporated in 1964. With the plant came a township to house the employees that are drawn from all over India.
Today the economy of Bokaro revolves around steel production. Visitors to the city will find the local tourist attractions include shopping malls and a number of temples. The village of Ukrid has been inhabited continuously since the 15th century, and has many ancient monuments.
