Ahmednagar is a city on the west bank of the river Sina, in the central part of the state of Maharashtra, India. It covers 39 sq km (15 sq mi) and has a population of 351,000 people (2012 estimate).
Human habitation in Ahmednagar goes back hundreds of years. The present city itself was founded in 1495 by Ahmad Nizam Shah as the capital of the Nizam Shahi dynasty, a Deccan sultanate. It lasted until conquered by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1636.
The Mughals built Ahmednagar Fort, one of the most unimpregnable forts in India. It was here that the British incarcerated Jawaharlal Nehru and other Indian Nationalists at the beginning of the fight for Indian independence.
Today Ahmednagar is a major producer of sugar in India. It has some twenty sugar factories in and around the city. The commonly used language here is Marathi, though Hindi is also widely spoken and understood.
