Habib Jewels, Pitt Street, Penang (8 February 2013)


Habib Jewels is a famous jeweller in Malaysia. It started in 1958¹ with its shop at 111 Pitt Street, within the Indian Muslim jeweller precinct of George Town. The founder is Datuk Haji Habib Mohamed Abdul Latif. From its beginnings as a city jeweller in Penang, the company has leap-frogged to become the first publicly listed jewellery company in Malaysia, and is today one of the best known jeweller companies in the country. The original building in which Habib Jewels began is today preserved for posterity.

According to the Penang Island Municipal Council², the two storey building may have been built in the mid-19th century. It has a row of timber shutters facing Pitt Street.
