Dumfries is a market town within the Dumfries and Galloway council area, in southern Scotland. The town is located near the mouth of the River Nith, as it empties into the Solway Firth. Dumfries today has a population of 43,000.
It is generally accepted that the area around Dumfries has been inhabited by the Roman times, and much evidence of Roman presence have been recovered, from coins to weapons and more. When exactly Dumfries was founded is vague, but we do know that it has been around by the 11th century.
