Wadebridge was originally known simply as Wade. That was because people had to wade across the River Camel to get to the other side. There was a ford here, with a chapel built on each side of the river. People wading from one side to the other could offer their prayers for a safe passage and thankgiving on arrival.
After many lives were lost wading across the River Camel, a bridge was eventually planned across the river. The person spearheading the project was Reverend Thomas Lovibond, the vicar of Egloshayle. The bridge was completed in 1468, and after that, Wade became known as Wadebridge.
