Present-day Bicester developed out of an Anglo-Saxon settlement that emerged in the 6th century. Pre-dating the Saxons is the Roman settlement of Alchester, located just 3 km (2 mi) to the southwest of the present town center. Bicester, meaning "two forts" was established by the West Saxons at the crossroad of ancient trade routes.

The Domesday Book in 1086 recorded Bicester as Berencestra. At that time it was held by Norman nobleman Robert D'Oyly. The town began as twin settlements on separate sides of the River Bure.
