The Region of Murcia is one of the autonomous communities of Spain. It is located on the southeastern part of the country, bordered by the Valencian Community to the northeast, Castile-La Mancha to the northwest and Andalusia to the southwest. It has a coastline facing the Mediterranean Sea to the southeast.
The Region of Murcia covers 11,313 sq km (4,368 sq mi) and has a population of 1.4 million people. It is an agricultural region producing fruits, vegetables and flowers as well as wines and olive oil. The terrain is relatively arid, which make the demand for water supply a pressing subject, particularly now that the region has also become a popular tourist destination.
