Galicia is an autonomous community of Spain on the northwestern corner of the country. It holds the official status of nationality, on account of its ethnic composition which places the local language, Galician, on par with Standard Spanish or Castilian.
Galicia covers 29,574.4 sq km (11,418.7 sq mi). It has a population of 2.8 million people, making it the 5th most populous autonomous community in the country. The capital is Santiago de Compostela.

Galicia is bordered by Asturias to the east Castile and León to the southeast, and Portugal to the south. It faces the Atlantic Ocean to the west and northwest.
