Extremadura is an autonomous community of Spain. It is located on the western part of the country, and is bordered by Castile and León to the north, Castile-La Mancha to the east, Andalusia to the south and Portugal to the west. Extremadura covers 41,634 sq km (16,075 sq mi) and has a population of slightly over one million people (2012 estimate). The capital of Extremadura is the city of Mérida.
Extremadura is in a sparsely popular interior of Spain. It is home to a number of national parks and reserves, such as the Monfragüe reserve and Tagus River Natural Park. The area experiences a Mediterranean climate.
Extremadura comprises the province of Badajoz and the province of Cáceres. These are divided into 383 municipalities.
