The
Zollverein Coal Mine in Essen is a World Heritage Site in the city of Essen, in North-Rhine Westphalia. The site contains the complete infrastructure of a historic coal-mine, including a few outstanding buildings from the 20th century. What makes this site of remarkable value is that it encapsulates the evolution of the coal mining industry, from its heydays to its declining years.
Zollverein Coal Mine in Essen was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 25th session of the World Heritage Committee meeting in Helsinki, Finland, on 11 - 16 December, 2001.
