Magdeburg is the capital of the state of Saxony-Anhalt in eastern Germany. Located on the river Elbe, it covers 201 sq km (78 sq mi) and has a population of 231,000 people (2012 estimate), narrowly surpassed by Halle which has 233,000 inhabitants.

Magdeburg was founded by Charlemagne in AD 805 and was originally called Magadoburg, meaning "mighty fortress". In 1035 it received the right to hold trade exhibitions. This forms the basis of city laws known as the Magdeburg rights which was eventually adopted by other cities in central and eastern Europe. The city embraced the Protestant faith in 1524 after Martin Luther, who had been a schoolboy there, preached his sermon in the city.

In terms of population, Magdeburg is a shadow of its former self. At the end of the Second World War, it had a population of 340,000 people. After the East German government abolished the state of Saxony-Anhalt, it was made the capital of the Province of Magdeburg. In 1990, with German Reunification, it beat Halle to become the capital of the re-established state of Saxony-Anhalt.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
