Hanau is a town in the district of Main-Kinzig-Kreis, in the administrative region of Darmstadt, in Hesse, Germany. It covers 76.49 sq km (29.53 sq mi) and has a population of 89,000 people (2012 estimate). The town is 25 km to the east of Frankfurt am Main.
Hanau developed on a semi-circle formed by the River Kinzig before it flows into the River Main. The town traces its history to 1143, when the initial settlement was established. A castle was built here using the River Kinzig as a natural form of defence.
At the end of the 16th century, Hanau received an influx of Protestant refugees who left Netherlands and France to practise their faith. They were invited to settle there by Count Philipp Ludwig II.
Due to its proximity to Frankfurt, Hanau today serves as a bedroom community for people working in the city.
