Provins, a fortified medieval town is a World Heritage Site of France. Famous for its medieval fairs, Provins is celebrated as a town where such fairs developed into the international trading fairs that we know of today.
Provins is especially famous for hosting fairs related to the wool industry. The town structure was specially planned and designed so that it could be a regular venue for such fairs. Much of this has been preserved and can be appreciated today.
Provins, Town of Medieval Fairs was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 25th session of the World Heritage Committee in Helsinki, Finland, on 11 - 16 December, 2001.
