Chinese Medical Halls are to Eastern medicine what pharmacies and drugstores are to Western medicine. Before Western medicine became prevalent, Chinese medical halls were where people come to buy medicine for their various ailments. Some of these medical halls also have in-house medical practitioners, or sinseh, who are able to provide presciptions.
There are many Chinese medical halls found in Penang, and indeed throughout the country. The biggest of them all is Eu Yan Sang, founded by tin miner Eu Kong, the father of the mining tycoon Eu Tong Sen, to provide relief for miners.
