Framed work of the McNair Street Porridge Stall (7 June 2004)
Diorama of Penang Chinese Food Stalls is a set of dioramas portraying the street scenes in Penang, particularly in George Town. In the first scene, we see a stall selling porridge. There are a few tables as well as a bar with men sitting on stools on top of a bench. This is how old Chinese men, particularly the trishaw peddlars, would sit in front of food counter, and it has been carefully preserved in this diorama. The backdrop shows utensils and other items, including a helmet hanging from the wall, a gas tank, baskets with items in pastic bags, each beautifully rendered.
A second scene shows a Chinese hawker selling
Ban Cien Koay. The lighting captures his profile, as he is surrounded by awaiting customers.
