The Phnom Penh National Museum is housed in a graceful terracoatta building of traditional design. It was built between 1917-20 just north of the Royal Palace. The museum is open from 8:00-11:30am and 2:00-5:30pm, from Tuesdays to Sundays. Photography unfortunately is forbidden inside the museum where the original artwork is on display.

The museum exhibits numerous masterpieces of Khmer art, artisanship and sculpture dating from the pre-Angkor period of Funan and Chenla (4th to 9th century AD), the Indravarman period (9th and 10th centuries AD), the classical Angkor period (10th to 14th centuries) and the post Angkor period (after the 14th century). As it is not air-conditioned, it is a rather warm place to visit during the day time.
