Kep is a coastal town in Kep Province, Cambodia. The town was established by the French and was originally called Kep-sur-mer. The colonial administrators created a resort for their own use, and today the locals are taking over, redeveloping it for present-day tourists.
Kap is close to the border with Vietnam. Some of the buildings built by the French are still standing, though they appear pretty run down. Kep was the top seaside resort in Cambodia until Sihanoukville surpassed it in the 1960s. Kep still has a long way to develop as a tourist destination.
