Jonquière is a city on the Saguenay River, in Quebec. Since 2002, it was merged to form one of the three arrondissements or borough of Saguenay. The census of 2001, the last before annexation, placed the population of Jonquiè at 54,842.
Jonquière was founded by Marguerite Belley in 1847, naming it after the Marquis de la Jonquière, governor of New France from 1749 to 1752. The town developed as a center for the pulp and paper industry, and at one time had the largest alluminium plant in the world. To power the alluminium plant, a hydroelectric power station was built in Shipshaw. At the time of its completion, it was the largest hydroelectric station in the world.
